Differences Between the Nokia and Mozilla 1.1 Licenses

Commentary provided by OSI

The Nokia license is derived from the Mozilla Public License (MPL) version 1.1. Nokia made the following changes to the MPL:

  • Cosmetic changes: In the definitions, the word "means" was changed to "shall mean" and the word "Code" was changed to "Software."
  • Nokia intends that they be the only user of their license. In addition to using their company name throughout the license, they removed the provision of the MPL that permits others to make derivative works from the license itself.
  • Nokia limits its liability to US$50.
  • This license removes the restrictions on US Government Users that is in the MPL.
  • This license is to be interpreted under copyright law, not under "intellectual property rights (other than patent or trademark)."
  • Disputes under this license are to be resolved under Finnish law, not California law. The differences between Finnish and California law are not described.

This commentary is provided by OSI to describe, in plain English, the differences among approved open source licenses. However, this commentary is not a part of the license. The legal effect of the license is dependent only upon the terms of the license and not this commentary. OSI encourages you to consult with your own attorney if you have specific questions about the application of OSI-approved licenses to your software.
